About This Place

Nestled in the vibrant neighborhood of Honolulu, Aburiya Ibushi offers an authentic Japanese izakaya experience that effortlessly blends tradition with modern dining pleasures. This cozy spot on Kapahulu Avenue invites guests to savor an array of charcoal-grilled delights and expertly crafted dishes that tantalize the senses with their rich, smoky aromas and bold flavors.

Aburiya Ibushi’s menu is a celebration of Japanese culinary craftsmanship. Must-try items include the Charcoal Grilled Rib Eye Steak Bowl, where tender, perfectly seared beef delivers a mouthful of umami goodness, and the Aburiyaki Beef Flank, smoky and succulent, highlighting their mastery of the grill. For those craving a lighter bite, the Sesame Tofu with Chili Sauce offers a silky texture balanced by a gentle kick of spice, while the Shishito Peppers provide a crisp, slightly blistered contrast that keeps you coming back for more.

The experience extends beyond the savory, with unique treats like the house-made Oxtail Congee comforting the palate with its rich, slow-cooked depth, and the Jelly Fish and Cabbage Salad offering a refreshing crunch contrasted by a light tang. Pair your meal with refreshing beverages ranging from locally inspired fruit vinegar ChuHi drinks — praised for their delicate sweetness and fizz — to a select lineup of beers that perfectly complement the smoky dishes.

Aburiya Ibushi isn’t just about the food; it’s the warm, inviting izakaya atmosphere that truly completes the experience. As diners like Lily P have noted, the staff’s attentive service enhances the meal from start to finish, although the place can get busy, so reservations are highly recommended. The cozy space buzzes with friendly conversations and the clatter of grill tools, making it an ideal hangout spot whether you’re catching up with friends or enjoying a laid-back evening out.

One delightful bonus for guests is the connection to the neighboring matcha and ice cream shop, allowing you to indulge in a sweet, creamy finish without leaving the area—though outside food and drinks are kindly discouraged during the meal.

While some find the portions on the smaller side, the quality and authenticity more than justify the price, offering excellent value as highlighted by many returning patrons like Mai Misoko and ni ashley. Even with occasional wait times during peak hours, the consistently delicious flavors and friendly ambiance make Aburiya Ibushi a must-visit for lovers of Japanese cuisine in Honolulu.

In sum, Aburiya Ibushi captures the essence of a traditional Japanese izakaya with a modern Hawaiian twist—through beautifully grilled meats, thoughtfully prepared sides, and an atmosphere that feels like the perfect balance between lively and intimate. For those craving a genuine culinary journey through Japan’s charcoal-grilled specialties, this gem on Kapahulu Avenue is ready to welcome you with open arms and sizzling plates.

Great service and great tasting dishes. Reservations is highly recommended. Parking is lacking, you'll need to find street/meter Parking. They also own the matcha/ice cream shop next door so you can bring those drinks while you dine. Otherwise no outside food/drinks.

Very good Japanese izakaya restaurant, lots of choice. Very good value for money. We recommend it. We'll be back to try other dishes.

Came relatively early with a reservation for 6:30. Appetizers are served really fast. As the restaurant got busier the waiters were kind of struggling to keep up with the orders of multiple tables. Ended up waiting a long time to get our add on order. Overall taste is good and still recommend this place.

"Wisdom comes even to a wet stone after three years." - Japonism Wisdom You had me at IZAKAYA! A couple of my Judo buddies have been wanting to catchup when I was back in town, so a long *one month long* layover lol made it perfect timing to meet up! My favorite Izakaya stop is Tori Ton, but I wanted to try something different, so booked their sister location, Izakaya Tenkichi, located just above. Happy as a clam as I've been wanting to checkout Tenkichi with my ninjas, however when I told one of my buddies of my choice, he revealed that another bro in our dojo didn't eat seafood. Huh what?! Mind you this ABB is Asian and travels to Tokyo & HK several times a year visiting family. Then again he's not the first Asian I know that doesn't like seafood. Just kinda weird heehe. Okay, now that I got that SUS out of the way lol... ABURIYA IBUSHI became a consensus choice with all the grass-fed menu options lol. Friday night after work was chosen and I booked it days in advance. A wait list option is available, just know while we were here it was really busy for hours. Upon arriving we were warmly greeted and given a choice of tables where to sit which was nice. The menus accessed via QR code or you can use Yelp or Google recent menu photos. We ordered family style and chose the country farm. OUR TABLE: "ABURIYAKI" BEEF FLANK: $18.00 KALBI SHORT RIB + UME SAUCE: $19.00. SHIO-KOJI CHICKEN KARAAGE: $10.50. "ABURIYAKI" GRILLED CHICKEN: $16.00. BEEF ROUND TATAKI: $18.00. HOUSE POTATO SALAD x2: $6.50 per. GRILLED YUKON GOLD POTATOES: $7.00. ONION + BUTTERED PONZU: $5.00. ASAHI DRAFT BEER: $7.50 each (several rounds). The standouts for me the "ABURIYAKI" BEEF FLANK, SHIO-KOJI CHICKEN KARAAGE, HOUSE POTATO SALAD, YUKON GOLD POTATOES, but imho everything was delicious! Ngl only thing I passed on was the large Onion that non-seafood bro ordered lol. Hey, more onions for him! Mmk. NINJA TIPS: NOW OPEN 7-DAYS A WEEK! WEEKEND LATE NIGHTS TIL MIDNIGHT! FREE STREET PARKING AFTER 6PM! IG: @ABURIYA_IBUSHI In the end, I really loved ABURIYA IBUSHI! I vibed that authentic Izakaya feels you'll find in Osaka and Tokyo. Cozy with tables that fills fast & furious, a hopping bar! The crowd was fun and diverse. The staff nice and we never felt rushed. Always checking on us, and yes another Biru, pleeeeeease! ABURIYA IBUSHI! KANPAI! 乾杯! Pls follow my IG adventures: @eric_travel_guru

Good place to hang and drink. Food quantity small. Everything is ok. Worth the try. If I need a place to talk and not too hungry and want some drink, good choice. Come to revisit in 2025! Still amazing and love the fruits vinegar ChuHi!!!!!!

Decided to try Aburiya Inushi and the food and service were great. Do not let the slightly worn and rough around the edges interior fool you, it is actually a great place to have a meal. We tried many dishes, I'm always surprised when the vegetables dishes are done very well, it shows that the same attention will be given to the other dishes. That being said, highly recommend the potato salad, I think it's the seasoning they put on top but regardless,it's a must. Also with the eggplant and minced meat is very good. For the meat eaters, definitely get the pork belly, it was delicious, especially with the light char on the meat, I just wish the prok belly was placed on the cabbage instead of sitting in the juice, but it still tasted great. The barbecue beef tongue was tender and delicious, especially when paired with the greens and wasabi. The barbecued skirt steak was very tender and cooked perfectly. The fried octopus was just okay. The rest of the dishes we had like the sausages and mushrooms were good. Overall, it is a very comfortable place and the food is tasty. Definitely need to make reservations a day or two prior because it gets busy in the evenings.

Must get the oxtail soup! The meat is tender and the soup is light but still has a good amount of flavor. We also ordered the potato salad, the sweet corn, the cold tofu with spicy sesame minced pork, the beef flank and the aburiyaki chicken thigh in shio koji. I thought everything was pretty good! The only thing is the restaurant is a very short staffed so service is a bit slow. It took them 30 min to give us water after we asked 3 times. If you sit at the bar, you can see the chef grilling the meat and it’s pretty cool watching him.

Aburiya Ibushi is all about that perfect smoky char — specializing in authentic Japanese charcoal-grilled (炙り焼き / Aburiyaki). Each dish carries deep, savory flavor with that unmistakable grill-kissed aroma. Reservations are HIGHLY recommended — seating is limited and fills quickly. The bonus? You can stroll right next door afterward for incredible desserts at Cha to Gelato Zen. Food: 4/5 Solid izakaya lineup packed with flavor and texture. - House Potato Salad (ポテトサラダ) - Ewa Sweet Corn (とうもろこし) - Lotus Root (蓮根 / れんこん) - Wagyugyu Beef Tongue (和牛タン) & Chicken Thighs (鶏もも肉) — absolutely phenomenal! - Ahi Tataki (マグロのたたき) — perfectly seared and seasoned. Ambience: 4/5 Compact but comfortable setting with clean bar and table seating. Ideal for a relaxed dinner date or hangout spot. Service: 4/5 Friendly and proactive staff. Our server went above and beyond — even checking dessert openings next door at Cha to Gelato Zen. Parking: 3/5 Parking is limited, so expect to walk a bit. Worth it once you’re seated and smell that charcoal.
